What are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are blank un programed cells, or cells that have yet to become specialised. They are in an early stage of development and have the ability to become any type of cell to form skin, bones, organs or other body parts. Stem cells can either replicate themselves, making more stem cells, or generate differentiated cells which are responsible for specific functions.
Are there different kinds of stems cells?
Yes. Stem cells come in three forms: embryonic stem cells, embryonic germ cells and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells come from embryos, embryonic germ cells from testes, and adult stem cells can come from bone marrow.
Embryonic stem cells have the ability to become virtually any type of cell within the body. Adult stem cells are more limited. They are found in adult organs. They are still developing and they have the potential to become any of the major specialized cell types within that organ. But recent evidence suggests it may be possible to reprogram adult stems to repair tissue.
The Role of Stem Cells in the Skin
Our skin contains many types of stem cells. They provide a constant source of new cells to maintain the skins functions and youthfulness.
Because skin cells in the epidermis are naturally shed from the skin, there must be a continuous delivery of newly differentiating cells illustrating the importance of Stem Cells in the skin.
The basal layer of the epidermis contains two basic types of cells:-
1) The slowly dividing epidermal stem cells (that represent about 2-7% of the basal cell population) and
2) The cells that they produce, that are rapidly diving cells that supply new cells to replace those that are shed, lost or dying through the skins natural desquamation process.
The process of stem cell self-renewal is slow, as stem cells die after a certain number of divisions and because each time the cells divide there is a risk of DNA mutation. Senescence is the natural process that, after approximately 50 divisions stops the cells being able to undergo further divisions and a major cause of tissue ageing. While a natural process, Senescence can also occur prematurely e.g. as a result of damage to the cellular DNA. This premature Senescence is especially detrimental when it occurs in stem cells, because they are essential for tissue regeneration.
So what can be done? Scientists turned to plants for the answer.
Plant Stem Cells and their effect on the skin
Plants also have stem cells. Like humans, plant stem cells depend on epigenetic control and signals from surrounding cells for their development. Unlike humans, however, each plant-derived adult stem cell possesses the ability to generate a whole new plant. Plant tissue cultures can be produced from nearly all plant tissues.

Protocell Clinical Studies
The anti-wrinkle effect of PhytoCellTec Malus Domestica was evaluated in a study with 20 volunteers aged from 37 to 64. Maintenance of Stem Cell Growth -
An in-vitro test was conducted on umbilical cord blood stem cells with Malus Domestica stem cell extract which is the active component of PhytoCellTec Malus Domestica. Umbilical cord blood stem cells (UCBSC) are the "youngest" safely available stem cells for research. The influence of Malus Domestica stem cell extract on UCBSC artificial growth was evaluated by counting the cell number after incubation.
Results showed that Malus Domestica stem cell extract has a positive effect on UCBSC's artificial growth thus maintaining the growth and proliferative activity of UCBSC.
Protection against UV Radiation -
A second in-vitro test was conducted on umbilical cord blood stem cells with Malus Domestica stem cell extract which is the active component of PhytoCellTec Malus Domestica. The protective effect against UV damage of Malus Domestica stem cell extract on UCBSC was evaluated by an MTS assay. UCBSC were incubated with different concentrations of Malus Domestica stem cell extract for 24 hr and then exposed to UV radiation. The MTS assay, which measures the number of living cells and therefore the damage from UV, was performed 48 hr after UV radiation.
Results showed the capacity of Malus Domestica stem cell extract to protect UCBSC from UV damage even at low concentrations.
Effect on Gene Expression in Senescent Dermal Fibroblasts -
Recently a cellular model for premature senescence was established based on normal human dermal fibroblasts. After 2 hrs of treatment with H202, the cells showed typical signs of senescence. This model was used to prove the anti-senescence effect of Malus Domestica stem cell extract. After the H202 treatment, the fibroblast cells were incubated with a 2% extract for 144 hrs. Then gene expression was analyzed with a DNA array system comprising 150 probes.
